‘Milestone’ is an optional setting that can be applied to phases in the ‘phase edit’ view of the template builder. When applying a template to a project, the project-create form will ask for deadlines for those milestone phases. Milestone deadlines for projects will be reflected in the project header, as well as in reports and analytics, and will assist you in tracking the progress or slippage of your projects.
Inputting Milestone and Deadline Data
Building the Template: Defining Milestone Phases
In the template builder, when you add a new phase or edit an existing phase, you will have the option of checking the ‘milestone’ tickbox, to define the phase in question as a milestone phase. This setting should be applied to phases that have hard deadlines, such as the handover phase and the fit-out phase.
Creating a Project: Milestone Phases as ‘Deadlines’
When you apply your template to a project, the project-create form will ask for deadline dates for any phases set with milestone status. Supplying fixed dates for each of these milestone phases is a required part of the project-create process.
Tracking Projects Against Milestones
Project Page Header: Milestone Phase and Deadline Date Tracking
Once your project has been created and is up and running, you will be able to track its progress in the right-hand section of the project header card. The project header card displays the current phase status: the name of the phase currently tracking against, the fixed deadline date, the projected date and the indicator of how many business days the project is ahead or behind.
The ‘currently tracking against’ phase is determined by the most imminent milestone deadline date.
Project Page: Workflow
You will see the phases defined as milestones in the workflow visual, and in the phase and task list, indicated by the industry-standard diamond milestone symbol.
How are projected dates and the milestone indicator calculated?
A = project start date (when ‘start project’ is clicked)
B = fixed milestone date for phase
C = total number of days in phase (defined by template)
D = total number of days projected for phase (defined by project)
X = Indicator (displayed with a + or – )
Y = projected milestone date
D = B – A
X = D – C
Y = B – X
A = 01.07.2018
B = 15.07.2018
C = 10
D = 14
X = +4
Y = 11.07.2018
